It is me Güero, hoping that this new blog finds you all in good health and good spirits. I am here to give you some updates about Wahkuna’s refit and some news about my humans.

C’est moi Güero, j’espère que vous allez tous bien et que vous avez la forme. Je viens vous donner des nouvelles de la rénovation de Wahkuna ainsi que quelques nouvelles de mes parents .

Soy yo, El Güero, esperando que a todos Ustedes se portan bien. Aqui están algunas noticias de la renovación de la Wahkuna y también algunas noticias de mis padres.

First of all, I am glad to report that as I am typing this blog , yes I can type with my paws, that both my humans are doing well. Mum and Dad have been very careful at staying away from crowds and are following Covid rules guide lines. They worked hard at keeping safe as they had a mountain of projects to complete on Wahkuna.

Pour commencer, je suis heureux de vous annoncer qu’à l’heure où j’écris ce blog (oui je peux taper avec mes pattes sur l’ordinateur), mes parents se portent bien. Ils ont tous les deux fait très attention à éviter la foule et ont suivi à la lettre les consignes sanitaires contre la Covid. Il fallait bien faire attention car avec la montagne de projets sur Wahkuna, il ne fallait pas tomber malade.

En primer lugar, tengo que decirle que a la hora durante la cual escribo ese blog ( sí puedo escribir a maquína con mis patas), mis padres se portan bien. Mamá y Papá fueron pendiente de no encontrarse en la muchedumbre y de seguir las instrucciones sanitarias contra el Covid. Fue necesario de tener mucho cuidado porque ellos tenían un montón de proyectos que completir con la Wahkuna.

Time for a break from the boat.

Dad’s guitar project came along, le projet de la guitarre de Papa a avancé; el proyecto de Papá siguó avanzando.

Mum finished her tub chaire renovation, Mama a fini la restauration du fauteuil crapaud, Mamá terminó el proyecto de la renovación del sillón.

We went for great walks. On a fait de superbes balades. Fuimos a disfutar maravillos paseos.

CHRISTMAS DAY, JOUR DE NOEL, DIA DE LA NAVIDAD

Santa Claus brought me a new winter jacket, I looked like Dracula.

Le Père Noël m’a apporté une nouvelle jaquette, je ressemble à Dracula.

More walks, encore des randonnées, más paseos.

There was even some snow. Il a même neigé. Y hubo nieve.

The weather got a lot better and Mum and Dad were back to work and we also climbed Slieve Binnian, standing at 747 meters, it is the third highest mountain in Northern Ireland.

La météo s’améliorant, mes parents étaient de nouveau au travail. Mais nous en avons aussi profité pour escalader Slieve Binnian qui haut de 747 mètres, est la troisième plus haute montagne d’Irlande du Nord.

El clima se fue mejorando y mis padres regresaron al trabajo, pero también ascendimos Slieve Binnian con sus 747 metros de altura, es la tercera montaña más alta de Irlanda del Norte.

END OF FEBRUARY

This was a busy month for Mum and Dad as they were able to get back to the boat and put longer hours of work.

Ce fut un mois bien occupé car mes parents purent retourner travailler sur le bateau pendant de plus longues heures.

Fut un mes bien ocupado, con largas horas de travajo para mis padres.

Dad worked on getting the engine’s injectors sorted out.

Papa s’est occupé de remettre à neuf les injecteurs du moteur.

Papá se encargó de arreglar los inyectores del motor.

We did some more hicking, I am becoming very good at walking for hours with Mum and Dad. Here, we are in Rostrevor on one of the view point, looking out toward the Republic of Ireland.

Nous avons aussi fait pas mal de randonnées et je dois dire que j’aime de plus en plus marcher avec mes humains. Voici quelques photos de notre escapade à Rostrevor et de la vue vers la République d’Irlande.

Fuimos mucho a pasear durante el invierno y me gusta cada vez más caminar por horas con mis humanos. Aquí estamos en Rostrevor, mirando la vista de la República de Irlanda.

April

In April, the weather allowed my humans to put longer hours of work on the boat. They finished the galley, sanded and finished the floor and started preping the hull for it antifouling.

En avril, le retour du beau temps a permis à mes humains de travailler de longues journées sur Wahkuna. Ils ont pu enfin finir la cuisine, polir et vernir le sol et préparer la coque pour sa peinture d’antifouling.

En abril, con el regreso del buen tiempo, mis humanos obraron durantes largos días en la Wahkuna. Terminaron por fin la cocina, pulieron y laquearon el suelo y prepararon el casco para la pintura antifouling.

May 31st was the deadline fixed by my humans to finally get Wahkuna in the water. Needless to say, it was a very busy month with very long hours of work to get everything finished on the boat and make Wahkuna comfortable again to live on.

Le 31 mai fut donné comme date finale pour finir le travail sur Wahkuna et la remettre à l’eau. Ce fut sans aucun doute un mois rempli de longues heures de travail afin d’accomplir tout ce qu’il restait à faire et d’organiser Wahkuna pour pouvoir de nouveau vivre à son bord.

El 31 de mayo fue la fecha oficial para cumplir con todo el trabajo y poner la Wahkuna de nuevo en el agua. Mayo fue un mes súper ocupado, con largas horas de trabajo para acabar con todos los proyectos y permitir que la Wahkuna sea de nuevo un hogar de habitación.

Hello there,

This is Güero coming to update you on the major refit that Wahkuna is undergoing in Northern Ireland. As you know Mum and Dad were away for the winter while I kept company with my Granny Gi. They came back home in the middle of March but then something weird happened. I heard my humans talked about a virus, something called Corona. Until then, I had only heard people in Mexico talk about Corona but now it was on everybody’s lips and mind and something was telling me that it was not refering to the Mexican beer. So, Mum explained to me that there was a virus called Coronavirus or Covid-19 which was going around and that we needed to stay at Granny Gi for a while. That suited me perfectly as the weather was getting warmer and I enjoyed some much needed suntanning and extra great food.

Ici Güero qui vient vous apporter des nouvelles fraîches de la Wahkuna toujours en restauration en Irlande du Nord. Comme vous le savez mes parents sont partis se balader dans le Pacifique Sud pendant l’hiver tandis que moi, je suis resté à me faire dorloter par ma Granny Gi. Mes humains sont revenus de leur escapade mi-mars et quelques jours après leur arrivée, quelque chose de bizarre est arrivée. J’ai commencé à entendre les humains parler d’un certain virus appelé Corona. Jusque là, j’avais uniquement entendu parler de Corona au Mexique, mais cette fois-ci ma petite patte me disait que cela n’avait pas grand chose à voir avec la bière de mon pays. Alors Maman m’a expliqué qu’un virus dangereux nommé Corona virus ou Covid-19 circulait chez les humains et qu’on devait rester encore quelque temps chez Granny Gi. A la bonne heure! Car avec les beaux jours qui arrivaient, je pouvais me bronzer et surtout continuer à profiter des bons petits plats de ma Granny.

Aquí estoy yó, el Güero para llevarles noticias frescas de la Wahkuna que todavía se ubica en Norte Irlanda. Como Uds lo saben, mis padres se fueron a pasear por el Pacífico Sur mientras me quedé con mi Abuela Gi, en Francia. Regresaron de su viaje a la mitad de marzo y poco días después de su llegada algo raro occurrió. Empezé a oír a los humanos hablando de un virus llamado Corona. Por hasta ahora había simplemente oído de la Corona en mi país, México. Pero aquí no se trataba de la famosa cerveza mexicana, sino de un virus peligroso nombrado el virus Corona o también Covid-19. Por causa del virus, mis humanos y yo tuvimos que quedarnos dos meses en la casa de mi Abuela Gi. Que rico! Así puse tomar el sol al gusto y comer los platitos deliciosos de mi Abuela.

But soon enough, I was back in the boot of the car heading on the highways of France to take the ferry to Cherbourg bound to Ireland. After 14 days of self-isolation, my parents took me back to my favorite place in Northern Ireland, Ringhaddy Cruising Club. As Mum and Dad got cracking into the numerous jobs on Wahkuna, I met up with my mates, Uncle John, Georges, Mervin and Davie. It was great to see them all and they still had some of those amazing treats with them which was even better for me.

Mais bientôt, je me suis de nouveau retrouvé dans le coffre de la voiture, sur les autoroutes de France, direction l’Irlande. Une fois arrivés et après 14 jours de quarantaine, je suis revenu dans mon lieu préféré en Irlande du Nord, le Club Nautique de Ringhaddy. Alors que Maman et Papa se sont mis à bosser sur Wahkuna, j’en ai profité pour retrouver mes copains, mon Tonton John, Georges, Mervin et Davie. C’était super de tous les revoir et en plus leurs poches étaient toujours aussi pleines de petites gâteries que j’adore tant.

Pero pronto me encontré en el baúl del carro, viajando sobre la carretera nacional de Francia en dirección de Norte Irlanda. Una vez llegados en Belfast y después de 14 días de cuarentena, mis padres me llevaron a mi lugar favorito, el Ringhaddy Cruising Club. Mientras mis humanos empezaron a trabajar con el montón de proyectos sobre la Wahkuna, encontré de nuevo a mis compañeros: el Tío John, George, Mervin y Dave. Me encanté verles y con suerte ellos todavía tenían en sus bolsas algunas golosinas que me encantan tanto.

Well, once my parents started working on Wahkuna, they certainly hit the ground running and put very long hours to make up for the time lost over the Spring. It was evident that with the virus still around and the huge amount of work to be completed, Wahkuna was not going to be put in the water this year. However, it gave my parents the time to really complete all their projects as best they could. One should always look on the bright side.

Bon, une fois la quarantaine de passée, mes parents se sont remis sérieusement au boulot sur Wahkuna pour essayer de rattraper le temps perdu pendant le confinement. Mais il a été très vite évident qu’entre le retard accumulé et la quantité de travaux encore à effectuer, Wahkuna ne pouvait pas être mise à l’eau cette année. En contrepartie, cela a permis à mes humains de finir au mieux tous leurs projets. Il faut toujours regarder le positif.

Bueno, una vez que la cuarentena se acabó, mis padres se pusieron en serio a trabajar para ganar el tiempo perdido por los dos meses de confinamiento. Pero fue evidente que estaban muy atrasados, que faltaba todavía una gran cantidad de obra y que la Wahkuna tendría que quedarse en la marina seca por el año. Pero lo bueno fue que mis padres ahora tenían todo su tiempo para terminar todos los proyectos. Siempre es importante de mirar el positivo.

Days on repeat mode, les jours à répétition, días en modo repetido.

For the next few months it felt as if my days were on repeat mode. Each day was spent at the marine working on Wahkuna and while I hung around giving everybody some love, Dad and Mum were busy inside and out on deck with Wahkuna.

Pour les prochains mois, j’ai eu l’impression que les jours se répétaient. Je passais mes journées à m’amuser à la marina et pendant ce temps-là, mes humains travaillaient de longues heures d’arrache pied.

Durante los próximos meses me pareció que los días estaban en modo repetido. Pasé mis días a divertirme en la marina, mientras mis humanos trabajaban sin parar durante largas horas.

SO WHAT DID THEY DO?, ALORS QU’ONT- ILS ACCOMPLI?, ¿Y QUÉ HICIERON?

Dad put back the motor on its mounts and connected it. It started the first time he pressed the starter button, what a relief. He installed a house battery monitor, replaced old wires, modified the base of the bed layout and started rebuilding the galley countrertop and the butterfly hatches. Dad also installed a heating system which will be welcome during those cold days. He modified the V berth bed frame, installed a new toilet and taps in the head.

Papa a remis le moteur en marche et il a démarré au quart de tour lorsqu’il a été mis en marche. Quel soulagement! En plus, il a installé un contrôleur de batteries, il a remplacé tous les vieux fils électriques et il a modifié le lit de la couchette principale, il a commencé à reconstruire le comptoir de la cuisine et les hublots principaux. Papa a aussi installé le chauffage dans le bateau ce qui sera bien agréable pour nous trois lorsqu’il fera plus froid.

Papá emprendió el motor y funcionó inmediatemente , que alivio! Instaló un control de batería, cambió los cables eléctricos viejos y modificó la litera principal: También empiezo a arreglar la cocina, la escotillas principales e instaló un sistema de calefacción que será bien agradable durante el invierno.

Mum attacked the hull below the water line to get all of the antifouling smoothed out before rerapplying, sometime next spring, a fresh coat of antifouling. She repaired the rudder and started chasing two wee stubborned leaks on the starboard side. Inside, she attacked the berths project, sanding all of the teak back and cleaning the old paint out in both the V-berth and the aft-berth. She applied again a second coat of Woodskin oil on all of the outside teak deck. She also worked on the uphostery, completing the cockpit cushions and took online courses to made a cockpit enclosure.

Maman s’est attaquée à la coque du bateau sous la ligne d’eau afin de nettoyer le bateau pour son antifouling au printemps. Elle a réparé le bout du gouvernail et trouvé l’origine de deux petites fuites d’eau qui faisaient encore des leurs. A l’intérieur, dans les deux couchettes du bateau, elle a poncé toutes les parois de teck et les surfaces couvertes de peinture afin de revenir et peindre le tout. Elle a aussi remis une deuxième couche d’huile protectrice sur le teck extérieur. Enfin elle a cousu de nouveaux coussins pour le cockpit et a commencé à prendre des cours en ligne afin de construire un enclos étanche pour le cockpit.

Mamá atacó al casco del velero bajo la linea del agua para pulirlo todo así está listo para el antifouling en el verano. Arregló también el timor y encontró y tapó dos goteras. En el interior pulió la madera, le puso laca y también pintó las superficies planas en blanco. Hizo todo esto dentro de ambos literas. Puso una capa de laca sobre la madera exterior y por fin, cosió dos cojines para el cockpit y empezó a seguir cursos en línea para coser un cercado para también el cockpit.

Together my humans also removed the forward bimini so that Andy, the gelcoat specialist, could work his magic and finish off Wahkuna’s new dress. They also worked on the chain locker, emptied it, removed all the 300 feet of chain and to my humans surprise found some extra length of chain hidden away under a battery shelf, in a locker underneath the V-berth. That was a very nice suprise.

Ensemble mes humains ont enlevé la partie avant du bimini afin de permettre à Andy, le spécialiste du gelcoat, de pouvoir travailler sans trop d’encombre sur le gelcoat de Wahkuna. Ils ont aussi vidé le cassier de la chaine et à leur grande surprise, mes parents ont trouvé une bonne longueur de chaine en plus qui s’était cachée pendant toutes ces années dans un placard au fond le cale. Belle surprise!

Juntos mis humanos llevaron una parte del bimini para dar más espacio de trabajo a Andy, el especialista del gelcoat. Vaciaron el casillero de la cadena para limpiarle y descubrieron otra cadena muy larga que se había escondida durante años al fondo del pantoque. ¡Que buena sorpresa!

One massive job that Mum and Dad did together is get Wahkuna ready to be painted. That meant sanding for a full week her deck do that the surface be as smooth as possible, no runs from the undercoat allowed, no little bubbles and so trapped dust. All has to be super smooth. To add to the aggravation, my humains also had to trape Wahkuna which basically consisted in them wrapping 40% of the deck in paper to protects the details and the wood. Wahkuna looked like she was ready for Christmas! Then Andy, the magic painter showed up and in a few stroke of his magic spray gun, Wahkuna looked like a brand new boat, gleaming away!!!!

Un des plus gros boulots que Maman et Papa ont fait ensemble a été de préparer le bateau à être peint. Cela a voulu dire que pendant une bonne semaine, le pont a dû être poli afin de ne laisser aucune trace de peinture de base, de petites bulles ou de grains de poussière amalgamés dans la sous-couche. Tout devait être parfaitement poli. Pour rendre les choses encore plus intéressantes, il a fallu ensuite protéger tout le bois et l’inox du pont et du cockpit. Mes parents ont passé plusieurs jours à protéger tous les détails et à la fin, Wahkuna avait l’air d’être prête pour Noël! Enfin Andy, le magicien est arrivé et en quelques coups de pistolets à peinture magique, il a transformé Wahkuna en un bateau tout neuf!!!!!

Uno de los proyectos que mis humanos hicieron juntos fue toda la preparación del velero por la capa final de pintura. Eso significó que trabajaron durante una buena semana a pulir el casco para que sea lo más lijo posible. No pudieron dejar ninguna marcas de pintura, ni una burbuja o tampoco pedacitos de polvo en la pintura de base. También tuvieron que proteger toda la madera con papel y cinta de pintura especial y eso también necesitó otra semana más de preparación. Pero por fin, Andy, el Mago, llegó y con algunos golpeos mágicos de su fusil de pintura, transformó a la Wahkuna en una embarcación nueva.
