It is me Güero, hoping that this new blog finds you all in good health and good spirits. I am here to give you some updates about Wahkuna’s refit and some news about my humans.

C’est moi Güero, j’espère que vous allez tous bien et que vous avez la forme. Je viens vous donner des nouvelles de la rénovation de Wahkuna ainsi que quelques nouvelles de mes parents .

Soy yo, El Güero, esperando que a todos Ustedes se portan bien. Aqui están algunas noticias de la renovación de la Wahkuna y también algunas noticias de mis padres.

First of all, I am glad to report that as I am typing this blog , yes I can type with my paws, that both my humans are doing well. Mum and Dad have been very careful at staying away from crowds and are following Covid rules guide lines. They worked hard at keeping safe as they had a mountain of projects to complete on Wahkuna.

Pour commencer, je suis heureux de vous annoncer qu’à l’heure où j’écris ce blog (oui je peux taper avec mes pattes sur l’ordinateur), mes parents se portent bien. Ils ont tous les deux fait très attention à éviter la foule et ont suivi à la lettre les consignes sanitaires contre la Covid. Il fallait bien faire attention car avec la montagne de projets sur Wahkuna, il ne fallait pas tomber malade.

En primer lugar, tengo que decirle que a la hora durante la cual escribo ese blog ( sí puedo escribir a maquína con mis patas), mis padres se portan bien. Mamá y Papá fueron pendiente de no encontrarse en la muchedumbre y de seguir las instrucciones sanitarias contra el Covid. Fue necesario de tener mucho cuidado porque ellos tenían un montón de proyectos que completir con la Wahkuna.

Time for a break from the boat.

Dad’s guitar project came along, le projet de la guitarre de Papa a avancé; el proyecto de Papá siguó avanzando.

Mum finished her tub chaire renovation, Mama a fini la restauration du fauteuil crapaud, Mamá terminó el proyecto de la renovación del sillón.

We went for great walks. On a fait de superbes balades. Fuimos a disfutar maravillos paseos.

Santa Claus brought me a new winter jacket, I looked like Dracula.

Le Père Noël m’a apporté une nouvelle jaquette, je ressemble à Dracula.

The weather got a lot better and Mum and Dad were back to work and we also climbed Slieve Binnian, standing at 747 meters, it is the third highest mountain in Northern Ireland.

La météo s’améliorant, mes parents étaient de nouveau au travail. Mais nous en avons aussi profité pour escalader Slieve Binnian qui haut de 747 mètres, est la troisième plus haute montagne d’Irlande du Nord.

El clima se fue mejorando y mis padres regresaron al trabajo, pero también ascendimos Slieve Binnian con sus 747 metros de altura, es la tercera montaña más alta de Irlanda del Norte.

This was a busy month for Mum and Dad as they were able to get back to the boat and put longer hours of work.

Ce fut un mois bien occupé car mes parents purent retourner travailler sur le bateau pendant de plus longues heures.

Fut un mes bien ocupado, con largas horas de travajo para mis padres.

Dad worked on getting the engine’s injectors sorted out.

Papa s’est occupé de remettre à neuf les injecteurs du moteur.

Papá se encargó de arreglar los inyectores del motor.

We did some more hicking, I am becoming very good at walking for hours with Mum and Dad. Here, we are in Rostrevor on one of the view point, looking out toward the Republic of Ireland.

Nous avons aussi fait pas mal de randonnées et je dois dire que j’aime de plus en plus marcher avec mes humains. Voici quelques photos de notre escapade à Rostrevor et de la vue vers la République d’Irlande.

Fuimos mucho a pasear durante el invierno y me gusta cada vez más caminar por horas con mis humanos. Aquí estamos en Rostrevor, mirando la vista de la República de Irlanda.

In April, the weather allowed my humans to put longer hours of work on the boat. They finished the galley, sanded and finished the floor and started preping the hull for it antifouling.

En avril, le retour du beau temps a permis à mes humains de travailler de longues journées sur Wahkuna. Ils ont pu enfin finir la cuisine, polir et vernir le sol et préparer la coque pour sa peinture d’antifouling.

En abril, con el regreso del buen tiempo, mis humanos obraron durantes largos días en la Wahkuna. Terminaron por fin la cocina, pulieron y laquearon el suelo y prepararon el casco para la pintura antifouling.

May 31st was the deadline fixed by my humans to finally get Wahkuna in the water. Needless to say, it was a very busy month with very long hours of work to get everything finished on the boat and make Wahkuna comfortable again to live on.

Le 31 mai fut donné comme date finale pour finir le travail sur Wahkuna et la remettre à l’eau. Ce fut sans aucun doute un mois rempli de longues heures de travail afin d’accomplir tout ce qu’il restait à faire et d’organiser Wahkuna pour pouvoir de nouveau vivre à son bord.

El 31 de mayo fue la fecha oficial para cumplir con todo el trabajo y poner la Wahkuna de nuevo en el agua. Mayo fue un mes súper ocupado, con largas horas de trabajo para acabar con todos los proyectos y permitir que la Wahkuna sea de nuevo un hogar de habitación.

Hello there,

This is Güero coming to update you on the major refit that Wahkuna is undergoing in Northern Ireland. As you know Mum and Dad were away for the winter while I kept company with my Granny Gi. They came back home in the middle of March but then something weird happened. I heard my humans talked about a virus, something called Corona. Until then, I had only heard people in Mexico talk about Corona but now it was on everybody’s lips and mind and something was telling me that it was not refering to the Mexican beer. So, Mum explained to me that there was a virus called Coronavirus or Covid-19 which was going around and that we needed to stay at Granny Gi for a while. That suited me perfectly as the weather was getting warmer and I enjoyed some much needed suntanning and extra great food.

Ici Güero qui vient vous apporter des nouvelles fraîches de la Wahkuna toujours en restauration en Irlande du Nord. Comme vous le savez mes parents sont partis se balader dans le Pacifique Sud pendant l’hiver tandis que moi, je suis resté à me faire dorloter par ma Granny Gi. Mes humains sont revenus de leur escapade mi-mars et quelques jours après leur arrivée, quelque chose de bizarre est arrivée. J’ai commencé à entendre les humains parler d’un certain virus appelé Corona. Jusque là, j’avais uniquement entendu parler de Corona au Mexique, mais cette fois-ci ma petite patte me disait que cela n’avait pas grand chose à voir avec la bière de mon pays. Alors Maman m’a expliqué qu’un virus dangereux nommé Corona virus ou Covid-19 circulait chez les humains et qu’on devait rester encore quelque temps chez Granny Gi. A la bonne heure! Car avec les beaux jours qui arrivaient, je pouvais me bronzer et surtout continuer à profiter des bons petits plats de ma Granny.

Aquí estoy yó, el Güero para llevarles noticias frescas de la Wahkuna que todavía se ubica en Norte Irlanda. Como Uds lo saben, mis padres se fueron a pasear por el Pacífico Sur mientras me quedé con mi Abuela Gi, en Francia. Regresaron de su viaje a la mitad de marzo y poco días después de su llegada algo raro occurrió. Empezé a oír a los humanos hablando de un virus llamado Corona. Por hasta ahora había simplemente oído de la Corona en mi país, México. Pero aquí no se trataba de la famosa cerveza mexicana, sino de un virus peligroso nombrado el virus Corona o también Covid-19. Por causa del virus, mis humanos y yo tuvimos que quedarnos dos meses en la casa de mi Abuela Gi. Que rico! Así puse tomar el sol al gusto y comer los platitos deliciosos de mi Abuela.

But soon enough, I was back in the boot of the car heading on the highways of France to take the ferry to Cherbourg bound to Ireland. After 14 days of self-isolation, my parents took me back to my favorite place in Northern Ireland, Ringhaddy Cruising Club. As Mum and Dad got cracking into the numerous jobs on Wahkuna, I met up with my mates, Uncle John, Georges, Mervin and Davie. It was great to see them all and they still had some of those amazing treats with them which was even better for me.

Mais bientôt, je me suis de nouveau retrouvé dans le coffre de la voiture, sur les autoroutes de France, direction l’Irlande. Une fois arrivés et après 14 jours de quarantaine, je suis revenu dans mon lieu préféré en Irlande du Nord, le Club Nautique de Ringhaddy. Alors que Maman et Papa se sont mis à bosser sur Wahkuna, j’en ai profité pour retrouver mes copains, mon Tonton John, Georges, Mervin et Davie. C’était super de tous les revoir et en plus leurs poches étaient toujours aussi pleines de petites gâteries que j’adore tant.

Pero pronto me encontré en el baúl del carro, viajando sobre la carretera nacional de Francia en dirección de Norte Irlanda. Una vez llegados en Belfast y después de 14 días de cuarentena, mis padres me llevaron a mi lugar favorito, el Ringhaddy Cruising Club. Mientras mis humanos empezaron a trabajar con el montón de proyectos sobre la Wahkuna, encontré de nuevo a mis compañeros: el Tío John, George, Mervin y Dave. Me encanté verles y con suerte ellos todavía tenían en sus bolsas algunas golosinas que me encantan tanto.

Well, once my parents started working on Wahkuna, they certainly hit the ground running and put very long hours to make up for the time lost over the Spring. It was evident that with the virus still around and the huge amount of work to be completed, Wahkuna was not going to be put in the water this year. However, it gave my parents the time to really complete all their projects as best they could. One should always look on the bright side.

Bon, une fois la quarantaine de passée, mes parents se sont remis sérieusement au boulot sur Wahkuna pour essayer de rattraper le temps perdu pendant le confinement. Mais il a été très vite évident qu’entre le retard accumulé et la quantité de travaux encore à effectuer, Wahkuna ne pouvait pas être mise à l’eau cette année. En contrepartie, cela a permis à mes humains de finir au mieux tous leurs projets. Il faut toujours regarder le positif.

Bueno, una vez que la cuarentena se acabó, mis padres se pusieron en serio a trabajar para ganar el tiempo perdido por los dos meses de confinamiento. Pero fue evidente que estaban muy atrasados, que faltaba todavía una gran cantidad de obra y que la Wahkuna tendría que quedarse en la marina seca por el año. Pero lo bueno fue que mis padres ahora tenían todo su tiempo para terminar todos los proyectos. Siempre es importante de mirar el positivo.

Days on repeat mode, les jours à répétition, días en modo repetido.

For the next few months it felt as if my days were on repeat mode. Each day was spent at the marine working on Wahkuna and while I hung around giving everybody some love, Dad and Mum were busy inside and out on deck with Wahkuna.

Pour les prochains mois, j’ai eu l’impression que les jours se répétaient. Je passais mes journées à m’amuser à la marina et pendant ce temps-là, mes humains travaillaient de longues heures d’arrache pied.

Durante los próximos meses me pareció que los días estaban en modo repetido. Pasé mis días a divertirme en la marina, mientras mis humanos trabajaban sin parar durante largas horas.

SO WHAT DID THEY DO?, ALORS QU’ONT- ILS ACCOMPLI?, ¿Y QUÉ HICIERON?

Dad put back the motor on its mounts and connected it. It started the first time he pressed the starter button, what a relief. He installed a house battery monitor, replaced old wires, modified the base of the bed layout and started rebuilding the galley countrertop and the butterfly hatches. Dad also installed a heating system which will be welcome during those cold days. He modified the V berth bed frame, installed a new toilet and taps in the head.

Papa a remis le moteur en marche et il a démarré au quart de tour lorsqu’il a été mis en marche. Quel soulagement! En plus, il a installé un contrôleur de batteries, il a remplacé tous les vieux fils électriques et il a modifié le lit de la couchette principale, il a commencé à reconstruire le comptoir de la cuisine et les hublots principaux. Papa a aussi installé le chauffage dans le bateau ce qui sera bien agréable pour nous trois lorsqu’il fera plus froid.

Papá emprendió el motor y funcionó inmediatemente , que alivio! Instaló un control de batería, cambió los cables eléctricos viejos y modificó la litera principal: También empiezo a arreglar la cocina, la escotillas principales e instaló un sistema de calefacción que será bien agradable durante el invierno.

Mum attacked the hull below the water line to get all of the antifouling smoothed out before rerapplying, sometime next spring, a fresh coat of antifouling. She repaired the rudder and started chasing two wee stubborned leaks on the starboard side. Inside, she attacked the berths project, sanding all of the teak back and cleaning the old paint out in both the V-berth and the aft-berth. She applied again a second coat of Woodskin oil on all of the outside teak deck. She also worked on the uphostery, completing the cockpit cushions and took online courses to made a cockpit enclosure.

Maman s’est attaquée à la coque du bateau sous la ligne d’eau afin de nettoyer le bateau pour son antifouling au printemps. Elle a réparé le bout du gouvernail et trouvé l’origine de deux petites fuites d’eau qui faisaient encore des leurs. A l’intérieur, dans les deux couchettes du bateau, elle a poncé toutes les parois de teck et les surfaces couvertes de peinture afin de revenir et peindre le tout. Elle a aussi remis une deuxième couche d’huile protectrice sur le teck extérieur. Enfin elle a cousu de nouveaux coussins pour le cockpit et a commencé à prendre des cours en ligne afin de construire un enclos étanche pour le cockpit.

Mamá atacó al casco del velero bajo la linea del agua para pulirlo todo así está listo para el antifouling en el verano. Arregló también el timor y encontró y tapó dos goteras. En el interior pulió la madera, le puso laca y también pintó las superficies planas en blanco. Hizo todo esto dentro de ambos literas. Puso una capa de laca sobre la madera exterior y por fin, cosió dos cojines para el cockpit y empezó a seguir cursos en línea para coser un cercado para también el cockpit.

Together my humans also removed the forward bimini so that Andy, the gelcoat specialist, could work his magic and finish off Wahkuna’s new dress. They also worked on the chain locker, emptied it, removed all the 300 feet of chain and to my humans surprise found some extra length of chain hidden away under a battery shelf, in a locker underneath the V-berth. That was a very nice suprise.

Ensemble mes humains ont enlevé la partie avant du bimini afin de permettre à Andy, le spécialiste du gelcoat, de pouvoir travailler sans trop d’encombre sur le gelcoat de Wahkuna. Ils ont aussi vidé le cassier de la chaine et à leur grande surprise, mes parents ont trouvé une bonne longueur de chaine en plus qui s’était cachée pendant toutes ces années dans un placard au fond le cale. Belle surprise!

Juntos mis humanos llevaron una parte del bimini para dar más espacio de trabajo a Andy, el especialista del gelcoat. Vaciaron el casillero de la cadena para limpiarle y descubrieron otra cadena muy larga que se había escondida durante años al fondo del pantoque. ¡Que buena sorpresa!

One massive job that Mum and Dad did together is get Wahkuna ready to be painted. That meant sanding for a full week her deck do that the surface be as smooth as possible, no runs from the undercoat allowed, no little bubbles and so trapped dust. All has to be super smooth. To add to the aggravation, my humains also had to trape Wahkuna which basically consisted in them wrapping 40% of the deck in paper to protects the details and the wood. Wahkuna looked like she was ready for Christmas! Then Andy, the magic painter showed up and in a few stroke of his magic spray gun, Wahkuna looked like a brand new boat, gleaming away!!!!

Un des plus gros boulots que Maman et Papa ont fait ensemble a été de préparer le bateau à être peint. Cela a voulu dire que pendant une bonne semaine, le pont a dû être poli afin de ne laisser aucune trace de peinture de base, de petites bulles ou de grains de poussière amalgamés dans la sous-couche. Tout devait être parfaitement poli. Pour rendre les choses encore plus intéressantes, il a fallu ensuite protéger tout le bois et l’inox du pont et du cockpit. Mes parents ont passé plusieurs jours à protéger tous les détails et à la fin, Wahkuna avait l’air d’être prête pour Noël! Enfin Andy, le magicien est arrivé et en quelques coups de pistolets à peinture magique, il a transformé Wahkuna en un bateau tout neuf!!!!!

Uno de los proyectos que mis humanos hicieron juntos fue toda la preparación del velero por la capa final de pintura. Eso significó que trabajaron durante una buena semana a pulir el casco para que sea lo más lijo posible. No pudieron dejar ninguna marcas de pintura, ni una burbuja o tampoco pedacitos de polvo en la pintura de base. También tuvieron que proteger toda la madera con papel y cinta de pintura especial y eso también necesitó otra semana más de preparación. Pero por fin, Andy, el Mago, llegó y con algunos golpeos mágicos de su fusil de pintura, transformó a la Wahkuna en una embarcación nueva.

Hola, Bonjour and Hello!

I have not had time to update my blog for a while as I have been very busy supervising Wahkuna’s major refit in Ringhaddy Cruising Club. My humans have been full on working day after day to make Wahkuna beautiful again inside and out. As for myself, I have had to up my seducing game as I have had so many people to meet and greet in this yard.

J’ai un peu laissé mon blog de côté ces derniers temps, car j’ai été vraiment occupé par ma supervision de la rénovation de Wakhuna. Mes humains ont travaillé d’arrache pied, jour après jour dans le port à sec du Ringhaddy Cruising Club afin de remettre le bateau en état. Moi, j’ai dû m’efforcer à séduire tous les membres du club, qu’ils aient deux ou quatre pattes et j’avais du boulot.

Dejé mi blog por un algún tiempo por culpa de la supervisión que tuvo con la renovación de la Wahkuna. Mis humanos trabajaron muy duro y cada día en la marina seca del Ringahhy Cruising Club para que la Wahkuna sea de nueva bella. Yo, tuve que seducir todos a los miembros del club que tengan dos o quatro patas. ¡Hubo un montón de trabajo!

First, there was the Spring during which I got to know John Scott very well. He is Mr Ringhaddy and he really likes me so I started helping him with his work around the yard. Soon, I had it wrapped around my finger and he started sharing his lunch with me! While I was working my charm with John, I also befriended Georges, Mervin and Dave who totally fell in love with me ( they are only humans). I have to say that all three became my besties and I would run after Georges or Mervin’s car each time they would make it down to the yard.

Tout d’abord il y eu le printemps durant lequel j’ai fait la connaissance de John Scott. c’est M. Ringhaddy et, très vite, nous nous nous sommes bien entendus. Je l’aide dans son travail et lui partage son déjeuner avec moi. Je me suis aussi fait quelques copains dans cette marina, notamment Georges, Mervin et Dave qui sont totalement tombés sous mon charme. Je dois dire qu’ils m’ont bien plu ces gars et chaque fois que je vois leur voiture arriver, je leur courre après pour leur faire la fête.

Durante la primavera, conocí a John Scott que es el Señor de Ringhaddy y me cayó bien con él. Le ayudé con su trabajo mientras tanto él compartió su almuerzo conmigo. Encontré también algunos amigitos en esa marina y mis favoritos fueron Georges, Mervyn y Dave con quienes me la pasé bien y cada vez que noté la llagada de uno de los tres vehículos siempre le corría detrás del caro.

Ringhaddy Cruising Club is a dog heaven, there are loads to inspect, sniff and explore and my days were well spent cruising around and meeting the members. I became quite familiar with John’s barge as well, The Scoobidoo, where I even climbed on one lunch time, as Uncle John was having some kind of yummy lunch.

Ringhaddy Cruising Club, c’est le paradis pour les chiens, il y a tellement de choses à inspecter, d’odeurs à renifler et j’ai passé mes journées à socialiser avec tout ce qui bougeait. John et moi sommes devenus inséparables, à tel point que je suis même monté sur sa barge, Scoobidoo, pour inspecter ce qu’il avait apporté à se mettre sous la dent, ou dans mon cas, le croc.

El Ringhaddy Cruising Club es el paraíso de los perros. Hay tanto que examinar, oler y pasé mis días socializando con todo lo que se movía. John y yo éramos inseparables y me subé sobre su embarcación, el Scoobidoo, para registrar lo que había traído de comer.

But what I liked the most about Ringhaddy are the BBQ. At first my parents were a little hesitant to bring me but soon discovered that I was in heaven, working the crowd. In fact, during the first BBQ, my charms worked so well that I was overfed the scraps and next day, I dragged myself around the Ormeau park, blotted from all the goodies I managed to get. I guess you can say that I was a little hangover!

Ce que j’aime vraiment le plus à Ringahddy ce sont les soirées BBQ. Au départ, mes parents ont hésité à m’amener, mais ils ont vite découvert que pour moi c’était vraiment le pied. En fait, pendant la soirée mes charmes ont tellement marché que je me suis gavé de petits morceaux de ceci et de cela mais à tel point que j’avais un peu la gueule bois le lendemain matin. Dur, dur les lendemains de fêtes!

Pero lo que me encantó lo más en el Ringhaddy fueron las fiestas. Al principio, mis padres dudaron llevarme, pero pronto descubrieron que para mi fue lo mejor. Durante la fiesta, alcanzé a comer tanto, gracias a las nombras pequeñas donaciones de cada invitados, que por la mañana siguiente me sentí un poco enfermo. Las fiestas irlandesas pueden ser terribles.

But for Mum and Dad, it was not all fun. They worked incredibly hard all year long. In the late winter, my humans managed to get the motor out of the bilge. It was quite a task to get it out of its hinges and even a bigger task to get the old mounts out. But after some determination and elbow grease, Dad managed to get all four mounts out and replace by bran new ones. Next, they attacked the exhaust system and had to pull a massive old disgusting pipe from the stern of the boat lazarette to the motor, It took them three days to get this bad boy out and in the process, Mum bruised her ribs bone, not a pleasant experience.

Mes humains se sont beaucoup divertis pendant ces soirées et il faut dire qu’ils en avaient bien besoin, car ils ont vraiment bossé pendant toute l’année. A la fin de l’hiver ils ont attaqué le travail dans la calle, en commençant par sortir le moteur. Cela a pris du temps et de gros efforts physiques de soulever ce moteur de ses bases et encore plus d’enlever ces dernières. Mais à force d’effort et de détermination, Papa et Maman sont non seulement arrivés à soulever le moteur mais aussi à remplacer ses vieilles bases par de flambantes neuves. Ensuite, c’était l’attaque du système du pot d’échappement et de toute sa tuyauterie vieille de 38 ans. La bataille entre mes humains et un énorme tuyau dégoutant a duré trois jours à la fin desquels Maman s’est même fait mal aux côtes , rien de grave, heureusement.

Mis humanos se divirtieron mucho durante estas fiestas y merecían un poco de descanSe por todo el trabajo que hacían en la Wahkuna. Al fin del invierno, empezaron la obra en la pantoque, empezando con el motor. Muchos esfuerzos y tiempo fueron necesarios para sacar el motor pero ya alcanzaron a llevar afuera el motor y cambiar sus cojinetes . Después, mis padres obraron sobre el sistema del mofle y sus viejas manguearas de más de 38 años. Durante tres días lucharon contra la mangueara y por fin la sacaron del velero.

We took a wee break from the boat to visit the family in France over the Easter holidays. It was lovely to feel the sun in the belly again and spend some cuddling time with my Granny Gi. My parents enjoyed the warmth and the relaxing time in the sun but they knew that a lot of work was waiting for them back on Wahkuna.

Pour les fêtes de Pâques, nous avons pris un peu de congés afin de rendre visite à ma Granny Gi, en France. Mes humains ont tellement apprécié de voir enfin le soleil et de ressentir la chaleur et ils en ont profité parce qu’ils savaient qu’une montagne de projets sur Wahkuna les attendait à leur retour.

Nos fuimos de vacaciones en Francia por la Pascua y pasé un poco de tiempo disfrutando de la Abuela Gi, del calor y del sol. Pero tuvimos que regresar en Irlanda donde un montón de trabajo esperaba a mis padres.

So, the second week of May, Dad started attacking the installation of a new bilge pump system, restoring the motor, removing all the old pluming, hose clamps, wires and other broken or used systems. He also started to work on installing a heating system as it gets quite cold in the winter in these parts of the world.

La deuxième semaine de mai, Papa a entamé l’installation du nouveau système de pot d’échappement, il a restauré le moteur, enlevé toute la vieille tuyauterie en tout genre de la cale, éliminé les vieux fils électriques et passé en révision tous les systèmes du bateau. Il a aussi commencé à installer un système de chauffage, car il peut faire froid sous ces latitudes.

Durante la segunda semana de mayo, mi Papá puso el nuevo sistema de mofle, limpió y verificó el motor, sacó todas las viejas manguearas, eliminó a los viejos cables eléctricos e hizo una revisión de todos los sistemas. Instaló también un sistema de calefacción porque hace un poco frío por aquí.

While Dad was busy enjoying himself in the bilge work, Mum attacked the exterior hull of the boat. Wahkuna was indeed in great need of attention as her gelcoat was spotted with thousand of tiny bubbles. Some had even burst, leaving a brown trail which made Wahkuna looked like she had a bad case of acne. Upon inspection and reflection, it appeared that the problem came from a reaction of the paint with the heat in Mexico while Wahkuna was being repainted in Guaymas. The paint was prevented from drying properly and the heat created a thin coat but trapped underneath acetone bubbles. The result of this was that Mum had to individually burst all of the thousands of bubbles, round each of them ( yes , that took a long time ) with a Dremel, powerwash the hull and sand it a a few time, then filled with marine puddy and sand, for a few weeks before applying four coats of 2 parts undercoat. That job just took 4 months to do!

Pendant que Papa s’ «amusait» dans la calle, Maman a entrepris l’entière rénovation de la coque. Wahkuna avait été repeinte à Guaymas, durant l’été mexicain, ce qui a valu, à la peinture, de mal sécher. En effet une peinture marine sous de fortes températures forme de petites bulles qui au fils du temps se remplissent d’acétone et Finissent par crèvent, pour laisser couler un liquide brun, donnant ainsi l’impression que le bateau à une vilaine crise d’acnée! Il était donc temps de remédier au problème et pour se faire, Maman a dû crever une par une chaque bulle, puis il a fallu passer le karcher, ensuite arrondir les miliers de trous laissés par les bulles pour les remplir de trois couches de résine marine, avec un ponçage entre chaque application. Pour finir, il a fallu couvrir le tout de quatre couches de peinture marine de base, nécessitant elles aussi, un ponçage entre chaque application. Durée totale de ce projet: 4 mois.

Mientras Papá se divertía en la pantoque, Mamá empiezo con la renovación completa del casco. De hecho la Wahkuna fue pintada en Guaymas, durante el verano mexicano y eso fue malo por la pintura. En efecto, se desarrollo burbujas de acetona debajo la pintura y se parecía como si la Wahkuna contrajó la varicela. Mamá tuvo que abrir cada una de los miles de burbujas, limpiarlo todo, redondeado cada uno de los huecos hecho por las burbujas, después cubriendo los huecos con yeso y lijar lo todo muchas veces. Finalemente, mi madre pintó el casco de la Wahkuna con tres capas de pintura marina de base. La duración completa de la obra fue de 4 meses.

Inside, the work continued and Dad attacked the head, rebuilding and tiling both the toilet platform and the shower stall. Dad removed all of the 38 year old head plumbing and upon inspection Mum asked him: Why is there a hose within the head hose? To which Dad answered: there is no hose within the hose, it is just the blind up of the crystals from the liquids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER DISTGUSTING. Mum and Dad drove home that night with all of the window from the car opened ( even though it was raining) as the disgusting smell from Dad’s clothing was so bad. Mum took over the head completing the grouting, applying four coats of paint after stripping and sanding each walls and sanding and varnishing the wood. At least there was a sense of completion once that small section of the interior was done. All there needs to be installed now is the new toilet and some taps. Hopefully a small job, lol!!!

A l’intérieur du bateau, Papa a tant qu’à lui rénové le cabinet de toilette en remplaçant la menuiserie et le carrelage à l’intérieur de la douche et sur l’assise du WC. Papa a éliminé la tuyauterie du WC qui était d’origine et lorsque Maman a inspecté la tuyauterie elle lui a demandé pourquoi il y avait un tuyau à l’intérieur de la tuyauterie. Question à laquelle Papa a répondu que ce n’était pas un tuyau mais l’accumulation de cristaux due aux années d’usage! DÉÉÉÉÉGOUTANT!!!!!!!! Ce soir là, Maman a exigé qu’on rentre à la maison avec toutes les fenêtres de la voiture ouvertes malgrè la pluie battante, tant Papa sentait mauvais!!!!! Maman a ensuite repris le projet salle d’eau, s’occupant du mortier du carrelage, elle a repeint les parois de la salle d’eau après les avoir réparées et poncer, pour finir avec le vernissage du teck. Voilà un autre projet de fini, il ne reste plus qu’à installer la nouvelle tuyauterie et le nouveau toilet!

Al interior del velero, Papá renovó el baño, arreglando la madera y embaldosado en la ducha y sobre la base del baño. Papá sacó la mangueara del baño que era de origen. Cuando Mamá inspeccionó a la mangueara, preguntó porque había otra mangueara adentro y Papá contestó que no era mangueara sino una formación de cristales del liquido, FEEEEÍÍCIMO!!!! Esa noche, Mamá exijo que conducimos a la casa con todas ventanas abiertas por el mal olor de los vestidos de Papá! Mamá completó la obra del baño con el yeso del embaldosado, pintó las paredes y barnizó la madera. Falta la instalación del nuevo baño y de la grifería y el proyecto del baño ya será terminado.

And when the weather was not good enough to work on the boat, Mum and Dad continued working for Wahkuna at home. Dad worked on a lot of mechanical and electrical projects while Mum tackled all of the boat covers. I helped with the making of the sail cover by acting as a weight on the fabric. It is a hard job, but somebody has got to do it.

Comme vous devez vous en douter, les jours de pluie qui ne pouvaient pas être passés au bateau n’étaient cependant pas perdus pour autant. Car Papa et Maman ont continué à travailler sur des projets pour Wahkuna à la maison. Papa s’est occupé de projets électriques et mécaniques alors que moi j’ai fait de mon mieux pour aidé à la couture. Dans les photos ci-dessous, vous pouvez constater que j’aidais activement à maintenir en place la toile que Maman coupait pour refaire les protections des voiles. C’était un dur travail!

A veces, llueve en Irlanda y cuando hacía mal tiempo, había que trabajar sobre proyectos como las fundas de las velas. Papá se encargó de los proyectos eléctricos y mecánicos mientras tanto intenté ayudar con la costura. Las fotos de abajo prueban que ayudé a mantener la tela por mi Mamá.

On top of working on the boat, Dad also continued to work on his guitar making although progress is fairly slow and Mum continued to attend her upholstery class with Nicola Parkes. I even started coming with her at the class, I stayed in the car and frequently had long naps, but I also worked my charm on some of Mum’s class mates. Well, what can I say, those girls are only humans! Here is the second project Mum completed, a massive chaise lounge which I am proud to say I inaugurated on the first night she brought it back home!

En plus du projet Wahkuna, mes humains ont continué leur hobbies, pour Papa celui de la construction d’une guitarre et pour Maman celui de tapisserie. J’ai même commencé à me rendre aux classe de tapisserie où j’ai charmé en peu de temps toutes les copines de maman y compris sont professeur, Nicola Parkes. Que puis-je dire, elles sont toutes folles de moi! Et en plus de cela ,Maman est revenue avec une magnifique méridienne dont j’ai eu le plaisir de tester le confort dès la première nuit, avant que maman ne découvre quelques mes poils sur la chaise.

Además del proyecto de la Wahkuna, mis humanos continuaron sus pasatiempos, para Papá con la construcción de una guitarra y para Mamá la tapicería. Fue con mi madre en la clase de tapicería y encontré a sus amigas, quienes por supuesto se enamoraron conmigo. ¡Que más puedo decir! Y con eso Mamá regresó con una meridiana bien cómoda, donde tuve el placer de probarla, antes que Mamá descubrió algunos pelos amarillos sobre su meridiana.

But 2019 was not all work, there were also three weeks during which my Granny Gi came to visit me from France. I was so happy to see her and I know that the feeling was mutual as she let me spend her first night back cuddling with her on her bed. My humans, Granny Gi and I took a trip down to Dublin. I had been there before to visit my Auntie Mags but this time it was to meet entirely new people: Grandpa Meinhard, Granny Monique, their son Michael and his wife Richelle as well as my two newest girlfriends: Jaime and Zoe. I enjoyed the trip, especially the cats that came into our Airbnb!! I had to chase them a little to make sure they were fun to play with but told off by Mum. Yet my favorite outing was at the 40 foot, a natural sea pool where people jump into the sea and the bravest even swim from it. Richelle, Michael and Mum were crazy enough to all jump in, Dad, the sensible one, chickened out and I, well, I just watched and stayed with Jamie and Zoe.

Il y eu tout de même en 2019 de la visite à la maison, celle de Granny Gi qui est venue me faire des calins pendant le mois d’août. Je dois dire que nous étions tellement contents de nous revoir que Granny Gi et moi avons même dormi ensemble la première nuit de son arrivée. Nous en avons profité pour partir en weekend tous les quatre à Dublin afin d’y rejoindre la famille de Maman venue de Nouvelle Zélande. Là j’ai fait la connaissance de nouveaux membres de la famille, Papi Meinhard, Granny Monique, leur fils Michael et son épouse Michelle et mes nouvelles adorables petites copines: Jaime et Zoé. Je me suis bien amusé pendant mon séjour à Dublin, surtout avec les chats qui venaient me rendre visite dans l’appartement. J’ai dû un peu leur courrir après, histoire de savoir s’ils voulaient vraiment jouer jusqu’à ce que maman me gronde. Ce que j’ai bien aimé fut ma sortie au 40 pieds, un point d’eau où les locaux plongent dans la mer Et ceux qui sont vraiment courageux s’y baignent même. Mais à 12oC, je ne risquais pas d’y mettre une patte par contre la folle de mère, Richelle et Michael ont plongé. Ils sont vraiment fous ces humains !

En el verano tuvimos la visita de la Abuela Gi que vino a cuidarme durante algunas semanas en agosto. Aprovechamos de la visita para irnos en la ciudad de Dublin a visitar a la familia de Mamá que venía de Nueva Zelanda. Encontré a nuevos miembros de la familia, como al Abuelo Meinhard y a la Abuela Monique, su hijo Michael con su esposa Richelle y finalmente mis nuevas novias, las lindas Jaime y Zoe. Me divertí mucho durante mi estancia en Dublin, especialmente con los gatos quienes entraron en el departamento alquilado. Tuve que correr un poco detrás de algunos de estos gatos hasta que mi Mamá me regañó. Lo que me gustó fue irme de paseo a los 40 pies, donde los humanos se meten en el mar. Pero con una temperatura de 12oC , no puse ni una pata mientras tanto mi Mamá se puso en el agua. A veces, pienso que los humanos están locos.

Then in September, while I stayed with Ciara and Jonny from Lead on, who babysat me for four days, my parents went to the Southampton Boat show to spend some money on Wahkuna. They told me that they had beautiful weather during their four days stay and enjoyed walking around the Boat show. Yes, they did spend some money on Wahkuna but also brought me back some presents, I know, I am a lucky boy.

En septembre, je suis allé passer un weekend avec Ciara et Jonny qui ont une entreprise de garde de chiens parce que mes parents avaient des billets pour le Salon Nautique de Southampton. Ce fut l’opportunité pour eux de prendre un petit bain de soleil, de découvrir les nombreux stands du Salon Nautique et à l’occasion de dépenser un peu d’argent pour Mademoiselle Wahkuna. Mais ils ne m’ont pas oublié pour autant et j’ai aussi eu quelques cadeaux. Je sais, je suis un peu gâté!

En septiembre, me fue a la casa de Ciara y Jonny por cuatro días. Ellos tienen un negocio de cuidar a los perros y me quedé con ellos mientras mis padres se fueron al Salón Náutico de Southampton. Para ellos fue una oportunidad de ver al sol y de descubrir los varios negocios de productos náuticos. Gastaron un poco de dinero por la Wahkuna pero también me compraron algunos regalitos. ¡Yo sé, soy un perro consentido!

Then Mum and Dad attacked the deck. There again much has to be done. The wood needed a light sanding and received two coats of woodskin to bring back its beautiful golden color. The deck itself needed to be stripped as much as possible. Dad took apart the stanchions which needed to be updated, the lifeline, all of the old screws and the butterfly hatches in need of much love, cut open the deck to tackle a leek. Mum took away all of the portholes, resealed and re-embedded all of them. She filled some jelcoat cracks and dinks in the deck. Then it was time to sand again and paint the deck with 2 parts undercoat. All of that work took the whole of the fall to complete. But the result was quite rewarding.

Il a fallu ensuite s’occuper du pont. Là encore il y avait de quoi faire. Le bois avait besoin d’un léger ponçage avant d’être protégé par trois couches de Woodskin pour lui redonner sa belle couleur dorée. Le pont en lui-même avait besoin d’un sérieux ponçage et d’être nettoyé le plus possible. Pour se faire, Papa a enlevé les chandeliers afin de les faire refaire ainsi que la main courante, tous les boulons rouillés et le capot papillon qui avait bien besoin. De son côté, Maman s’est occupé des hublots, commençant ainsi la chasse à une petite fuite que nous avions du mal à localiser. Elle a donc recéler le pourtour des hublots avant de remettre en place ces derniers et de les céler. Avec de la fibre de verre et de la résine d’époxy, elle a bouché quelques petits trous dus à l’usure avant de nouveau de faire chauffer la ponceuse et de finalement recouvrir de trois couches de peinture marine. Tout ce travail sur le pont aura duré tout l’automne et ce n’est que le 7 décembre que mes humains ont enfin finila restoration extérieure du pont.

Había que encargarse de la cubierta de la Wahkuna. La madera necesitó ser lijar y protegida con tres capas del Woodskin que dieron a la madera su color dorado. La cubierta requería mucha más atención. Las botavaras fueron pintadas, sacaron los soportes de las lineas de vida, todos los tornillos corroídos y los ojos de buey y las escotillas. Mamá se encargó de descubrir una fuga. Ella selló los ojos de buey, arregló los huecos de la cubierta con fibra de vidrio y polió de nuevo toda la área antes de pintarla de tres capas de pintura. Toda esa parte de la obra duró todo el otoño y finalmente, el 7 diciembre, mis padres terminaron la renovación de la cubierta.

Now that winter is here, my humans and I are going to take a break from the boat project to go and spend sometime in France. We are looking forward to spending some time with Granny Gi and all the family. Then I heard that Mum and Dad are going to go on a South Pacific trip in Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand. I would have come with them but dogs are not welcome in these parts of the world and I much prefer staying with my Granny Gi who I know will spoil me. So stay tune for Wahkuna’s crew next adventures!

Maintenant que l’hiver est arrivé, mes humains et moi allons passer un peu de temps en France pour les fêtes de Noël. J’ai aussi entendu dire que mes parents allaient partir en voyage dans le Pacifique Sud où ils visiteront l’ Australie, la Nouvelle Calédonie et la Nouvelle Zélande. Je serais bien venu avec eux mais les chiens ne sont pas les bienvenus dans ces coins du monde et de toute façon, je préfère rester chez ma Granny Gi, à mes faire dorloter. Alors, à bientôt, pour les prochaines aventures de l’équipage de la Wahkuna!

Ahora que el invierno está aquí, nos vamos de vacaciones en Francia para disfrutar de la Navidad con la Granny Gi y la familia. Oyé también que mis humanos se van de viaje en el Pacífico Sur a descubrir la Australia, la Nueva Caledonia y la Nueva Zélanda. Me encantará irme con ellos, pero en esas partes del mundo, los perros no están los bienvenidos y a mí me importa más quedarme con mi Abuela Gi! ¡ Nuevas aventuras llegaron pronto!
